About this deck

This deck covers 11 basic color words and 14 common shapes. Color cards give an everyday object in that color; shape cards describe the shape by its sides and corners, which is how children start to tell a square from a rectangle.

It is designed for toddlers and preschoolers, and for adults teaching English color and shape words to young learners.

If you print the deck, color the front of each color card with a marker or crayon before cutting, so the word and the color appear together.

Study tips

  • Go on a color hunt after each session: find three things in the room that match the card.
  • For shapes, count the sides and corners together with a finger.
  • Teach circle, square and triangle first; add rectangle, oval and star once those are solid.
  • Use building blocks or paper cutouts so children can hold the shapes, not just look at them.

Frequently asked questions

›At what age do children learn colors and shapes?

It varies widely. Many children name a few colors and simple shapes between ages two and four; there is no need to rush.

Yes. A square is a special rectangle with four equal sides. For young children it is fine to treat them as separate shapes first.

›What is the difference between a rhombus and a diamond?

"Diamond" is the everyday name; "rhombus" is the math name for a shape with four equal sides that may be tilted.
