First Grade Sight Words Flashcards (Dolch List, 41 Words)
Showing question
About this deck
This deck covers the 41 words on the Dolch first grade list, including "could", "once", "thank" and "were". Several of them break common spelling patterns, which is why they are worth practicing as whole words.
The front shows the word; the back shows a short sentence that uses it. Reading the sentence aloud is a good check that the word is truly known.
Children usually reach this list after the pre-primer and primer words. Print the cards for a home word wall, or study them here with spaced review.
Study tips
- Group words that start the same way (then, them, think, thank) and practice telling them apart.
- Point out irregular spellings like "once" and "could" so children know these will not sound out normally.
- Time a quick run through the known pile once a week; children like seeing their time drop.
- Move any word that causes a pause back to the learning pile, even if it was known before.

Frequently asked questions
›How many first grade sight words are on the Dolch list?
There are 41. This deck includes all of them.
›Is this the same as the Fry first grade list?
No. Dolch and Fry are separate lists with a lot of overlap. Fry's first 100 words are in a separate deck in this library.
›What if my first grader already knows these?
Move on to the Fry first 100 words or to reading short books. Sight word practice is a support for reading, not a replacement for it.
