How to Print Double-Sided Flashcards
The trick to double-sided flashcards is getting each answer directly behind its question. Here's how to set up the layout and your printer so it works the first time.
Updated
Why the backs don't line up
When you turn a sheet over, left and right swap (or top and bottom, depending on how you flip). So the answer for the card in the top-left corner has to be printed in the top-right corner of the back page. If the layout doesn't account for that, every answer ends up behind the wrong question.
Our printable flashcard maker mirrors the back pages for you. What's left is making sure your printer flips the paper the way the layout expects and doesn't rescale the page.
Step 1: Prepare your cards
Make or import your deck. Check long answers in the preview; text auto-fits to the card, but very long answers will end up small. If an answer is a paragraph, consider splitting the card.
Choose your layout:
- Paper size: A4, US Letter, or Legal โ whatever is in your printer. Or 3ร5, 4ร6, or 5ร8 if you're printing on real index cards (index card template).
- Cards per page: from 1 to 16. Six or eight per page is a common balance between size and paper use.
- Cut lines and margins: cut lines make trimming easier; a small margin helps if your printer can't print to the edge.
- Numbering: handy if you drop the stack.
Step 2: Choose double-sided and the flip edge
Select Double-sided. You'll be asked how your printer flips the page:
- Long edge (also called "book" or "flip on long edge"). The page turns like a book. This is the default on most printers for portrait pages.
- Short edge (also called "tablet" or "flip on short edge"). The page turns like a notepad flipped upwards.
The option you pick here must match the option you choose in your print dialog in Step 4. If they don't match, the backs will be upside down or in the wrong column.
Not sure which your printer uses? Print a two-page test (or the calibration page in Step 3) and look at which way the back is oriented.
Step 3: Print the calibration page once
Even with the right settings, many printers shift the back side by a millimetre or two because the paper doesn't feed perfectly straight. On small cards that's noticeable.
Print the calibration page double-sided. It has marks on the front and matching marks on the back. Hold the sheet up to a light or window and see how far the back marks are from the front ones, horizontally (x) and vertically (y). Enter those numbers as the back offset. It's saved in your browser and applied to every future print, so you only need to do this once per printer.
Step 4: Set up the print dialog
Click Print to open the PDF, then open your system or browser print dialog. These settings matter:
- Scale: Actual size / 100%. Turn off "Fit to page", "Shrink to fit" or "Scale to fit". Scaling moves everything slightly and ruins alignment.
- Paper size: the same size you chose in the layout. Printing an A4 layout on Letter paper (or vice versa) will shift the cards.
- Two-sided / Duplex: On. Then choose long edge or short edge to match Step 2.
- Orientation: leave it on automatic or match the layout.
- Margins: if there's a margins option in the dialog, choose "None" or "Default"; don't add extra.
Where to find these varies. In Chrome's print dialog they're under More settings. On macOS, the duplex option may be under Layout or a printer-specific section. On Windows, look under Printer properties or Preferences.
Tip: some browser PDF viewers apply their own scaling. If alignment is off, download the PDF and print it from a dedicated PDF reader with "Actual size" selected.
Step 5: Print a test sheet, then the rest
Print just pages 1โ2 first. Hold the sheet up to the light: the card outlines on both sides should overlap. If they do, print the rest. If they don't:
- Backs are upside down: the flip edge doesn't match. Switch between long and short edge in either the layout or the dialog (not both).
- Backs are in the wrong column: same cause โ check the flip edge.
- Everything is shifted by the same small amount: adjust the back offset using the calibration page.
- Cards are slightly smaller than expected: the dialog is scaling. Set it to 100% / Actual size.
No duplex printer? Three alternatives
Manual duplex. Print fronts only. Put the printed stack back in the tray, flipped according to your printer's paper path, and print backs only. Printers differ in whether the printed side should face up or down and which edge goes in first, so test with one marked sheet: draw an arrow on a blank sheet, note how it went in, print, and see where the ink landed.
Fold in half. Choose fold-in-half. Fronts and backs are printed on the same side of the sheet; fold along the middle line, glue or tape if you like, and cut. No flipping needed, and alignment is always right. The paper is twice as thick, which also makes cards sturdier.
Side-by-side study sheet. If you don't need cards at all, print a sheet with questions on the left and answers on the right. Fold the page to hide the answers and test yourself.
Paper and cutting
Plain 80โ90 gsm (about 20โ24 lb) office paper works, but you'll see the answer through it under bright light. Heavier paper or card stock around 160โ200 gsm (about 60โ75 lb cover) makes sturdier cards that don't show through. Check what your printer supports; many home printers handle thicker paper better through a rear or manual feed.
For cutting, a paper trimmer or a craft knife with a metal ruler gives straighter edges than scissors. Turn on cut lines and cut the full sheet into strips first, then into cards.
Frequently asked questions
โบShould I choose long edge or short edge?
For portrait pages on most printers, long edge is the normal setting. What matters is that the option in our layout and the option in your print dialog are the same.
โบWhy are my cards slightly off even with the right settings?
Most printers have a small feed offset. Print the calibration page, measure the shift, and enter it as the x/y back offset.
โบCan I print double-sided from my phone?
Yes, if your phone's print dialog offers two-sided printing and actual size. Otherwise, save the PDF and print from a computer.
โบWhat's the easiest option if I don't want to fiddle with settings?
Fold-in-half. Both sides print on one side of the paper, so there's nothing to align.
